Drill Sergeant James White is surprised to see Jason Smith, a weak and frail friend from his hometown, in the latest batch of recruits to Foxtrot company. Private Jason's heart is in the right place but his body can't seem to stand up to the physical rigour of the training.

During a heated discussion, James realises that Private Smith isn't going to be able to pass the physical training test without his help. Offering additional training to Jason during the little extra personal time they have, these private sessions just before lights out turn out to be a little too close for comfort...

“Now, if you’re going to learn ground-fighting properly, you’re going to have to learn to break out of mount.” Jason said, as James struggled to break free from underneath him, “Remember your Combatives training…either bridge and roll or try for an elbow escape.”

Wheezing badly, Jason continued to thrash around wildly before finally going limp.

“No, no, no, no, no…” James repeated, his knees squeezing the sides of Jason’s torso, “I’m not letting you off until you at least attempt to bridge and roll.”

“I…I can’t.” Jason said, half-dead on the mats.

The past few weeks, they’d spent most of the little personal time Jason had available focusing on ground fighting and core exercises. James believed that building a strong core was the key to physical fitness and had designed a makeshift program to help Jason pass.

It was working, albeit a little too slowly for James’s liking. Still, it was pretty encouraging to see how far Jason was coming along. “C’mon soldier, at least give it a shot.” he said, loosening his grip slightly to make it a little easier on Jason.

With a loud grunt, Jason bridged over his shoulders, tossing James over on his back. Staring at Jason on top of him, the look on his face said it all. “Good work,” James said, smiling heartily, “I can’t believe you actually managed to sweep me. I guess there’s a first time for everything huh.”

“Yup,” he replied, sweat dripping off his forehead, “But just so you know, it’s not going to be the last.”
