On her way in the rain to her weekly babysitting job, Mary takes shelter at her small town long-distance bus station. Sitting on the bench is a solitary stranger, with a scar across his cheek and an intensity about him. Breaking the ice, he begins to talk to Mary, and asks her an unusual question about her dreams for the future.

As an officer in a clandestine military unit, he is going to a far off war torn land, and has a gut feeling he may never return. But there is one last thing he wishes for, one last thing he needs to do to make his life complete.

Mary reluctantly leaves him at the bus station, after having warmed to him. But later, when the Nelson family have already left the house, and Tommy is fast asleep, she leans out of the window and calls him over and invites him inside...
