It was near lights-out when a knock came at my door. “Yes?” I called.

Mr. Ferdinand let himself in. “I hope I’m not disturbing anything,” he said as he locked the door.

I was polishing my shoes as I sat on the end of the bed, still dressed. “No, sir.” I set down the shoes and rag. “How’s your writing?”

Mr. Ferdinand’s countenance warmed a little. “Rather hard to concentrate, you might imagine, after you got home.” He had a seat at my desk. “Why on earth would you tell me….”
