She held me easily, let me sit up far enough to grab my wrists in one hand. Before I had realized what she had done, Valencia tied my wrists together tightly with five of my braids. She sat astride my hips and let me struggle. “You’ll stay,” she said easily. “And you’ll learn to break the warlock’s curse. Meanwhile, I either need to learn your worth or learn what he’ll do to have you back.”

My stomach dropped at this prospect, but I wasn’t in a position – literally or figuratively – to argue. I let myself be pulled to my feet by my bound wrists.

I still pulled subtly at my hair, until my scalp ached. It was strange to work so hard against my own body, to be trapped if not betrayed by it. Clever of Valencia though; she had always been clever. If only she had tied me in a less humiliating position.

Or not tied me at all, I reminded myself. But the thrill and danger of these circumstances…I was oddly attracted to them.
