Carrie’s heart skipped as she realized the thing was coming upstairs, right where they were. She looked around for Ashley and Erin, but they were nowhere around the bar. As she turned to flee, Adrian caught her arm in a strong grip and shook his head. Kevin and Nicolas had vanished.

It was only until the dog clambered up the stairs that she noticed that it wasn’t a dog at all. It was a grey wolf with a thick pelt and black streaks running along its hide. For a moment, she was breathless and forgot herself. She had never seen one. She marveled at how large its head was, the big ears perked upright as its snout sniffed, searching with its strange black eyes. She stood unmoving, transfixed as some people are when confronted by wild, untamed beauty. Girls screamed as it nipped at their heels and the sound seemed to snap her out of her dream. Fear quivered her legs as she gazed at the beast, realizing how powerful its jaws must be, how easy it would be for the wolf to leap to her throat and—

Adrian dove in front of her, his teeth bared in a snarl as the wolf locked eyes with them and leapt forward.

“Ben!” he screamed. “Ben, stop!”

Was he calling for someone? No, he was addressing the wolf. Carrie’s head reeled with the strangeness of it. Her hands clapped her mouth as two wolves, a black one and a tawny, suddenly tackled the wolf.

“Oh my God, there are two more!”

The grey wolf yelped as their teeth sank into his fur and dragged him back. Ears flat, they yanked on his hide and tail, pulling him away from Adrian and Carrie.

“Come on,” he said as he tugged her arm.
