I drove through the black of the night, putting as much distance between myself and my problems as I could possibly manage, trying and failing to clear my thoughts of the terrible, self-depreciating thoughts.

I felt as though no one could love me.

I remembered the days of feeling loved and cared for by my ex-boyfriend, with “feeling” being the key word- in reality he'd cheated on me, with someone thinner, better, prettier...

And now I was fleeing the thought of my humiliation like the plague, roaring through the moonlit darkness with no other goal or destination in sight.

I stopped at a rest stop, thinking I needed a break, and maybe something to eat to keep me from getting hungry.

And it was sitting on the park table in the center of the stop's picnic area, my only company in the world the thorough blackness of the early morning, that it began to sink in how truly messed up my life had become.

And that's when I saw the eyes light up at me, and the teeth flash in the darkness.

A werewolf.

Instantly I ran, not bothering to keep track of the ferocious canine I felt certain was chasing me like a feral monster, but the grass was too slick, and I ended up falling on my face against the hard, dew moist ground.

And I knew it would only be a matter of time before this creature of the night devoured me...
